As AFVs, Scav Scraggers have a long and storied history with the Fearcrushy. The first Scav Scragger AFV, dates back over two hundred years to the late industry, early information age. Officially the Terruk LT-25 Light Combat Vehicle, it gained is nom de guerre due to its famous use in the suppression of civil unrest over the formation of unions, when the LT-25 was used to literally drive over protestors.
(A note in passing that neither the unions nor their opposition had happy endings, as the rising class of business moguls (who most opposed the unions) ran afoul of the High Shaman who Wasn’t Having Any Of That. The public defenestration of several of the offenders (of both sides) was a reminder that the ultimate authority in the newly-minted Fearcrushy was still Gutrug, and not either money or the people. Capitalism remained something that most orc thought happened at the start of words and free market was between markets toow and forr.)
The modern Scav Scragger Scout Truck (the fifth AFV to bear the name) is a purpose-built reconnaissance vehicle produced by Gughat’s Fist. To maximise its ability to remain undetected, the Scav Scragger is designed for use by goblins and kobolds and is thus too small for most humans (and orcs) to fit inside.
The front-mounted engine gives it an excellent top speed for tracked vehicle, and the relatively dainty six-and-a-half ton weight gives it a low ground pressure, giving Scav Scragger the mobility to traverse most terrain easily. Fearcrushy doctrine typically as the Scav Scraggers deployed with mine ploughs. On the practical level both helps get through difficult terrain. But, in the grand tradition of the Scav Scragger name, it is still not unknown for the crew to use mine ploughs as crude but not ineffective rams against light forces (such as for instance, crowds – or any animal large enough to potentially be dinner!) The tips of orc mine ploughs are often kept nice and sharp by their crews.
The Scav Scragger does have a sensor suite (the primary sensor is mounted on the top of the weapon station), but as with most Fearcrushy electronics, is relatively primitive by moderns standards. And for the old-fashioned observation by eye – something that remains undetectable by sensors, the Scav Scragger provides an additional tool.
While the front and rear of the top of the tracks are used for storing gear in the typical fashion, the middle section – right beneath the doors – is kept clear. The armoured skirt rides about twelve centimetres above the top of the tracks and is sufficient to providing safe observation step for the goblin and kobold crew when lying down, and the rest of the vehicle is properly camouflaged.
For what would nominally be a soft-skin vehicle, the Scav Scragger benefits from a surprisingly tough hull, thanks to advanced orc armour technology. The front armour is rated to Tier 13 verses energy, better than the modern CVR (T) Scimitar and Scorpion scout tanks of the British Stellar Empire. (A line of vehicles whose own pedigree is just as old as the Scav Scagger’s.)
The Scav Scagger’s armament is a remote-crewed weapons station. A quartet of Ruk 20mm autocannons form the core of the armament , with an effective range of 2km and a rating of Tier 12 collectively. These are mounted on a high-elevation turret, and serve as the vehicles active point-defence system. Four sensor-lock Urgat-Korm anti-tank missiles are carried, two each in a box on either side of the turret. The Urgat-Korms are on an independent elevation system, allowing them to be fired at different targets to the main guns, or while the guns are engaging drones or missiles. However, while the Urgat-Korms are all aspect missiles, their effectiveness is somewhat reduced if the guns are engaging targets in a different firing arc to the missile’s target.
Six smoke dischargers provide some additional visual countermeasures.
First produced in the mid-2320s, the Scav Scragger is entering the middle-age of its service life and has seen several upgrades. Reliability was initially good, but these refinements have made the Scav Scragger particularly popular amongst its crews, with even the most complicated portions – the electronics – being durable and easy to access and replace and Scav Scraggers are likely to be serving for at least another couple of decades.
