The first human encounter with the Strayvian Dominion in 2336 sent the DHZ army into something of a panic. The return of humanity’s old enemy and the invasion of the DHZ’s military largest trading partner in the Soviet Empire via the Strayvian’s modern ground forces was a monumental shock. The DHZ, being situated towards the spinwards end of human territory, only a little antispinwards of the fractured clusters of minor powers in the Mironi sector, felt suddenly horribly exposed.
It was apparent that to the DHZ that even the shake-up on that decade was not going to be enough. The DHZ immediately began to develop its current generation of armoured vehicles to improve on the initial refinements made in the 2320s and early 2330s.
The ZTZ-342 is the newest DHZ main battle tank. DHZ procurement had to finally open it purses to equip the ZTZ-342 with a full range of modern electronics. It has significantly better armour that is predecessors, with a maximum rating of Tier 19. At limit of the DHZ’s limited investment in vehicular technology, this is still quite light for a typical human MBT.
The 120mm cannon has both APFSDS and HEAT rounds, and achieves a kinetic penetration of Tier 20 at half a kilometre, though drops to Tier 18 at its two kilometre limit. Mounted to the right of the main gun is a coaxial heavy machine gun. The armaments are completed by a 10mm autocannon remote point-defence turret.
While still somewhat primitive by most standards, the ZTZ-342 is nevertheless a respectable vehicle, and its advanced sensors and electronics give it an edge over it contemporaries that could make-up or even exceed the differences in armour and penetration.
